The perennial question, and the first major theoretical question I came across in the PGCE, was what exactly do I think the subject I’m going to be teaching is?

Arguably RE is distinct from the majority of the “main” subjects (English, Maths, Science, Modern Foreign Languages, History etc.) because it is explicitly concerned with pupils’ morality, spirituality and belief systems.  So unlike these other subjects, RE deals with something that is inherently personal, different and protected by each pupil.  At its core it is fundamentally intangible; and this has led to a problem in defining the…
